Therme DC: A New Wellness Destination in Washington D.C.
Washington, D.C. is on the verge of welcoming a remarkable health and well-being facility at Poplar Point, recognized as one of the last prime waterfront development sites along the East Coast. This innovative project, called Therme DC, was recently awarded to the Therme Group by the city.
Details of the Project
The announcement made on Thursday by Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development revealed plans for the construction of a wellness center and resort spanning 15 acres along the scenic Anacostia River. The total investment is valued at approximately $500 million.
Therme DC aims to offer a wide array of amenities designed to promote relaxation and health, including:
- Thermal baths
- Multiple saunas and wet rooms
- Thermal and mineral pools
- Waterslides and relaxation areas
- Diverse dining options
Economic Impact and Job Creation
Projected to encompass 600,000 square feet, Therme DC is anticipated to generate approximately $1.5 billion in tax revenue over a span of 25 years and create around 720 permanent jobs upon completion.
Mayor Bowser emphasized the project’s potential by stating, “Not only will it create jobs and opportunity, it will serve as a catalyst for economic growth along the Anacostia waterfront in Ward 8.” She described Therme DC as a “unique opportunity for D.C.” that would attract visitors and provide significant local benefits.
Location and Future Development
Situated on the south side of the Anacostia River near the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, Poplar Point faces Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals, and lies just two miles south of the U.S. Capitol. The site will also feature a 70-acre riverfront park and trail system in addition to 25 acres designated for mixed-use development.
This project forms part of a broader vision for the area’s redevelopment, with the HR&A Advisors consulting firm playing a pivotal role in planning and designing the site, with Therme DC as its central element.
Global Expansion of Therme Group
The Vienna-based Therme Group is making significant strides in expanding its footprint in the U.S. market. After initiating its search for locations in D.C. in early 2023, the company established a joint venture with The Georgetown Company aimed at developing ten wellness resorts across the country, each encompassing roughly 500,000 square feet.
