How Matt and Denise Riley built southwest Iowa's most trusted custom flooring name, one home at a time.
Most people have lived the same flooring experience. A salesperson arrives, quotes a price, then disappears. A subcontractor no one has met shows up days later to install a floor no one designed with any real care. The job gets done, but nothing about it feels personal. In Red Oak, Iowa, two entrepreneurs decided that experience was not good enough.
Matt and Denise Riley founded The Carpet Store in 2007 with a conviction that has never wavered. Every client deserves a floor that is truly their own. Nearly two decades later, that belief has made their family-owned business one of the most respected names in flooring and home remodeling across southwest Iowa.
A Different Way to Sell a Floor
At The Carpet Store, there is no handoff. The person who helps you choose your floor is the same person who measures your home. The person who installs your floor is the same person who has spent years studying how flooring is built and how it performs over time. No middleman. No subcontractor who does not know your project the way the Rileys do.
Denise has spent nearly two decades helping the region's most discerning homeowners and businesses find exactly the right floor. She visits your home, takes the measurements herself, and brings a designer's eye to every consultation. Her role does not stop at the sale. She ensures every detail is right before a single plank or tile is ordered.
"Denise doesn't just sell a floor," Matt says. "She helps our clients imagine what their home could feel like. That's a completely different conversation than what you get at a big box store."
Every floor the team installs is custom. It is designed for that home, that family, that life. "We don't sell flooring off a shelf. We create it for you," Matt explains. "No two floors are the same. Every home is different, every client is different, and every installation we do reflects that. We don't do cookie cutter."
Craftsmanship Backed by Rare Expertise
What truly sets The Carpet Store apart is the depth of knowledge behind every installation. Matt holds ten IICRC certifications, covering carpet cleaning, repair and reinstallation, water restoration, odor control, upholstery and fabric cleaning, color repair, fire and smoke restoration, health and safety, trauma and crime scene work, and color damage. He also holds three IICRC Journeyman designations: Journeyman Fire and Smoke Restorer, Journeyman Textile Cleaner, and Journeyman Water Restorer.
In December 2026, Matt will complete the final time requirement to achieve IICRC Master status, having already fulfilled every other credential required. That places him among a small, elite group of flooring professionals in the entire country.
"I got certified not because I had to, but because I wanted to truly understand what I was doing," Matt says. "When you know how a floor is supposed to perform, you install it completely differently."
That knowledge shows in the work. "Most people don't realize how much goes into a great installation," Matt notes. "The floor you see is only part of it. What's underneath, how the subfloor is prepared, how the material is acclimated, all of that matters. We don't skip steps."
Matt is also a State of Iowa Licensed Contractor, and The Carpet Store is an IICRC Certified Firm. Those credentials mean every project meets full state and industry compliance standards. You are not hiring a handyman with a truck full of flooring. You are hiring a licensed, certified, nationally credentialed professional who happens to operate out of a small town.
A Showroom Built for Every Vision
The Carpet Store carries one of the most extensive selections in the region. Customers can choose from carpet, hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate, tile, and natural stone from industry-leading brands including Mohawk, Anderson Tuftex, Shaw, Dal-Tile, and Pergo. Every product comes with manufacturer-backed warranties, and pricing competes with the national chains without sacrificing personal attention.
Beyond the showroom, the team handles subfloor repair, area rug binding, custom area rugs, carpet repair and re-stretching, and commercial installations. Their shop-at-home service brings samples directly to your door, so you can see exactly how a floor will look in your space before committing.
The showroom also houses Designs by Denise, a women's clothing boutique that reflects the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit driving everything the Rileys do.
Trust Earned One Floor at a Time
The results speak for themselves. "We built our dream home outside of Red Oak and knew we wanted something no one else had," recall Jennifer and Tom of Red Oak. "Every room is different and every floor is perfect. Matt's installation was so clean our builder asked us who did the work."
Commercial clients feel the same way. "I manage several commercial properties across southwest Iowa and The Carpet Store is the only flooring company I trust," says Rick, a property manager in Atlantic. "When you need it done right the first time, there's only one call to make."
For Carol of Shenandoah, the difference was personal. "What Matt installed doesn't look like anything you'd find at a big box store," she says. "It looks like it was made for my home, because it was. I wish I had done this years ago."
That loyalty stretches across Red Oak, Clarinda, Atlantic, Shenandoah, Glenwood, and communities throughout southwest Iowa. It reflects a simple standard the Rileys set for themselves at the start. "We're a small business in a small town," Matt says. "We compete by being better. Better prepared, better trained, and more personally invested in the outcome than anyone else in our market."
The Rileys have never chased volume. Every client receives the same level of attention regardless of the size of the job. "Southwest Iowa deserves the same quality of work that you'd find in any major city," Matt says. "That's what we set out to prove in 2007, and that's what we're still proving every day."
