Rory’s journey into interior design is far from conventional. Before embarking on his career as an interior designer, Rory spent over 15 years in the software technology industry, where he honed his skills in customer research, interaction design, and project management. He even holds an engineering degree from Stanford University, which has influenced his approach to creating functional, aesthetically pleasing designs.
After years of working in the tech industry, Rory’s passion for design was sparked by his own experiences. His journey began when he and his wife decided to build their own custom home from scratch. “After two remodels, my wife and I decided to take on the challenge of building a new custom home from a blank plot of land,” says Rory. “The project was a lot of work over multiple years, but the deeply rewarding result inspired me to help others bring their dream homes to life.”
Seeing the success of his own project, friends began asking Rory to help with their home projects. This was the turning point when Rory realized he could turn his passion into a full-time career.
From Software Design to Interior Design
Making a career switch from software design to interior design posed significant challenges. Building a reliable pipeline of work in a new industry was one of the biggest obstacles Rory had to overcome. “Hiring a designer requires a lot of trust because homes are intimate spaces, and people invest significant amounts of money into remodeling and redecorating,” explains Rory.
To tackle this challenge, Rory leaned on his personal network, building trust through word-of-mouth and personal connections. He quickly completed 20 projects in his first year, a remarkable achievement for someone entering the field without any prior professional experience in design.
As his career progressed, Rory expanded his marketing by showcasing his design portfolio, gathering client testimonials, and documenting the transformation of select projects. “My inspiration comes from a dynamic mix of influences , historical architecture, timeless materials, well-crafted antiques, and the beauty of nature. We love layering in fine art, personal collections, and travel mementos to make each space truly personal,” says Rory.

Fun Facts About Rory
While Rory is passionate about interior design, he also enjoys a variety of hobbies that contribute to his well-rounded character. A lover of music, Rory sang bass in the San Francisco Symphony Chorus for three years. He also has a love for storytelling through musical theater, having played the role of Fagin in Oliver!—one of his favorite roles.
When he’s not designing homes, Rory enjoys skiing, with his favorite resorts being Zermatt, Switzerland, and Palisades Tahoe, USA.
