Andrew Hughes Nominated as Deputy Secretary of HUD
The Trump administration recently made strides in filling leadership vacancies at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) with the nomination of Andrew Hughes as Deputy Secretary. This announcement was made by Secretary Scott Turner, alongside commentary from various members of Congress.
Background of Andrew Hughes
Andrew Hughes has an extensive background with HUD, having served in various capacities under former Secretary Ben Carson during Trump’s first term. His journey began with involvement in Carson’s 2016 presidential campaign, followed by a role within the University of Texas system before his appointment to HUD in 2017. Hughes currently holds the position of Chief of Staff at HUD.
Support for the Nomination
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Secretary Turner expressed enthusiasm for Hughes’s nomination, describing him as an “American patriot” and a “servant leader.” Turner extended his gratitude to President Trump for placing trust in Hughes as a candidate for this significant role.
Former Secretary Carson also voiced his support, noting, “Andrew Hughes has served right by my side for the better half of the last decade.” He commended Hughes for his dependability and hard work, affirming that Hughes’s experience makes him a natural choice for this position.
The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) quickly responded to the nomination. President and CEO Bob Broeksmit congratulated Hughes, highlighting his prior role as HUD Chief of Staff as a critical asset for advancing HUD’s initiatives, particularly in enhancing affordable housing options.
Additionally, Senator Tim Scott, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, backed Hughes, asserting that his experience under Carson and Turner equips him to enhance the housing policies aimed at making homeownership more accessible to Americans.
Looking Forward
With Hughes at the helm as Deputy Secretary, there is optimism regarding potential reforms aimed at improving HUD’s operations and fostering increased accountability. Broadening housing affordability remains a key goal, supported by the collaborative efforts of HUD leadership and associated stakeholders.
In recognition of the challenges ahead, Broeksmit indicated that the MBA is prepared to collaborate with Hughes and HUD’s leadership to tackle pressing issues while enhancing operational efficiency and technology modernization.
